Built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Lakshmi Vilas Palace was constructed in 1890 at a cost of GBP 180,000 (Rs.27, 00,000). Designed by Major Charles Mant, it is reputed to have been the largest private dwelling built to date and four times the size of Buckingham Palace. At the time of the construction, it boasted the most modern amenities such as elevators and the interior is reminiscent of a large European country house. It remains the residence of the Royal Family of Vadodara, the Gaekwads. Spread over 700 acres, the Lakshmi Vilas Palace was built in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. 

The entranceway of the palace is basically a palm courtyard with an ornate fountain. It has 170 rooms and it was built just for the Maharaja and Maharani. The darbar hall is one of the most majestic features of the palace as it is adorned with mosaic floors, period furniture, Venetian chandeliers, and Belgian stained glass windows. This ornate room houses some of the best sculptures made of bronze, marble, and terracotta and is often used as the venue for cultural events and musical concerts. The palace complex also consists of several buildings, particularly the LVP Banquets & Conventions, Moti Baug Palace, Navlakhi stepwell, Golf Course, the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum building and a small zoo. The Museum building was constructed as a school for the Maharaja's children. Today a large number of works of art belonging to the Royal family have been displayed in the museum. The most remarkable of these are the fabulous paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, who was specially commissioned by the then Maharaja of Baroda. The collection includes portraits of the Royal family in addition to the paintings based on Hindu mythology for which Raja Ravi Varma was famous. 

In the 1930s Maharaja Pratapsinh created a golf course in its premises for his European guests. It was renovated and opened to the public by his grandson Samatjitsinh in the 1990s. There is also a miniature railway line, which circled the mango orchard within the palace compound, to take the children of the Royal family from the school to the main Lakshmi Vilas Palace. The train engine was recently refurbished by Ranjitsinh Pratapsinh Gaekwad that can be seen at the entrance of the Museum. The splendid palace also has a number of gardens which were designed by the very famous botanist Sir William Goldring who also designed the famous Kew Botanical Gardens in London. Though the royal family still resides in this magnificent palace, a part of the palace is open for visitors. There is an hour's audio tour in English Hindi and Marathi available. Photography inside the palace is strictly prohibited.

The Fateh Singh Museum building was constructed in 1875 AD as Motibaug School for Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Maharaja Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad and later Maharaja Fatehsinhrao Gaekwad, as well as other members of the royal family including Maharaja Ranjitsinh Gaekwad, completed their schooling here. This beautiful building of the museum is a reflection of the Indo-Saracenic architecture style that still houses personal belongings of the Gaekwad family. The building was converted into a museum in 1961. Today a large number of works of art belonging to the Royal family have been displayed in the museum.

The museum contains artworks collected by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III during his numerous trips out of India. One of the artists commissioned by the Maharaja was an Italian artist Fellicci whose works adorn not only the Museum but also the Lakshmi Vilas Palace. Some of Fellini's works can also be seen in the manicured Sayaji Garden. The museum has an Oriental Gallery which houses Japanese and Chinese artifacts collected by the Maharaja on his visits to these countries. The museum reflects the grandeur and lavish lifestyle of the Gaekwad family.

The fully functional Toy Train that the prince Ranjitsinh Gaekwad received on his fifth birthday from his father Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad, can now be found in the museum. In 2015, the museum has inaugurated a headgear gallery where vibrant headgears from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra collected by Maharaja Ranjitsinh Gaekwad are displayed. This makes the museum one of the very few museums in the country to have a gallery dedicated to headgears.

At a distance of 2 km from Vadodara Railway Station, Sayaji Baug is a public park located in Vadodara, Gujarat. Also known as Kamati Baug, it is one of the largest public gardens in Western India and among the top places of sightseeing in Vadodara.

Situated on the banks of Vishwamitri River, Sayaji Baug was built by Maharaja Sayajirao III in 1879. Sprawling over an area of 113 acres, the garden houses a Zoo, Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery, the Museum of Health and Hygiene, the Sardar Patel Planetarium and an operational toy train. Maintained by Vadodara Municipal Corporation, the park has three entrance gates where the main gate is at Sayaji Square locally known as 'Kala Ghoda Chowk' because of an equestrian statue standing there. This gate is only 800 meters from the main railway station. The third gate is at Rana Pratap square in Fatehgunj area, while the second gate stands somewhere in between first and third gates. Sayaji Baug, decorated with sculptures placed on pedestals, is an ideal place to rest and relax with well-maintained lawns and fountains. Around 98 species of trees can be seen here.

The major attraction of the park is the floral clock, situated at the center of the garden and is the first of its kind in Gujarat. The machinery of the clock is underground, and its hour, minute and seconds hands move on a 20 feet diameter dial. There is also an astronomy park next to the planetarium that showcases the ancient Indian astronomical instruments. Another attraction of this park is the toy train that serves as a joy ride for visitors. Running on a small track width of 10 inches along a distance of 3.5 km, Joy train has 4 coaches and each coach will accommodate 36 passengers.

Built-in 1894, the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery within Sayaji Baug preserves a rich collection of art, sculpture, ethnography, and ethnology. Major attractions of this museum include Egyptian mummy and a skeleton of a blue whale. The picture gallery, which was opened in 1921, exhibits artworks of British painters. Situated near the main gate of Sayaji Baug, the Sardar Patel Planetarium offers daily public shows as well as special shows to educational institutions. Established in 1932, the Health Museum situated in the Sayaji Baug premises is noted for its health exhibits, models of human anatomy, maps, and charts on the subjects of health and sanitation.

Situated on both the banks of the River Vishwamitri in Sayaji Baug, the zoo was opened for the visitors in 1879. Situated in the natural atmosphere, Sayaji Baug Zoo has 35 types of mammals including the tiger, the lion, the panther, deer and so on. Nestled amidst beautiful gardens, the Aurobindo Ashram is a large red-brick structure with tall towers and wooden white windows. The Ashram contains 23 rooms in all, houses a library, a study room, and a sales emporium. The ashram is open to every person who is interested in meditation, spirituality and The Mother. The Mother, who was originally known as Mirra Alfassa, was a disciple and collaborator of Sri Aurobindo. Shri Aurobindo believed her to be the incarnation of Mother Divine and hence named her The Mother. The Statue of Unity is a colossal statue of Indian statesman and the Ironman of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950) who was the first Home Minister of India. The statue was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in 2018. The project was carried out by the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET) which was established for this purpose. Designed by the Indian Sculptor, Ram Vanji Sutar, the construction was taken up by the Indian company Larson & Toubro. The Rs. 2,989 crore project took 42 months, and round-the-clock work by 3,400 laborers and 250 engineers to complete. The statue has been erected to propagate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's vision of India and to inspire the citizens of India through his patriotism and freedom struggle.

Surrounded by a 12 km artificial lake, the monument compound is spread across 20,000 square meters. The Bronze statue of the founding father of the Republic of India stands 182 m tall grabbing the attention of the whole world as the 'Tallest Statue in the World'. The statue is 23 meters taller than China's Spring Temple Buddha statue and almost double the height of the Statue of Liberty (93 m) in US. For this project, the government had been collected nearly 135 metric tonnes of scrap iron from farmers all around the nation.

The statue is divided into five zones of which only three are accessible to the public. From its base to the level of Patel's shins is the first zone which has three levels and includes an exhibition area, mezzanine floor, and roof. It contains a museum, a memorial garden, and an Audio Visual Hall to depict the life and struggles of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The 2nd zone reaches up to Patel's thighs, while the 3rd extends up to the viewing gallery at 153 m. The concrete towers which form the statue's legs contain two elevators each that can carry 26 people at once to the viewing gallery in all of 30 seconds. One can get a panoramic view of the surroundings from the viewing gallery. Zone 4 is the maintenance area while zone 5 comprises the head and shoulders of the statue.

In the evening, a 30-minute laser show is conducted every day. There is a three-star hotel inside the complex for those who are willing to stay overnight. From the mainland, visitors need to take a bridge to get to the statue. One can also find ferries to reach the statue from the edge of Sardar Sarovar Dam.

Also known as Narmada Dam, the Sardar Sarovar project was a vision of the first deputy prime minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The foundation stone of the project was laid out in 1961 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The project took form in 1979 as part of a development scheme to increase irrigation and produce hydroelectricity. The dam provides water to generate power and supply water for drinking and irrigation to states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Having a length of 1.2 km and a depth of 163 m, it is the third highest concrete dam in India and the 2nd biggest concrete dam in the world. It is a part of the Narmada Valley Project, a large hydraulic engineering project involving the construction of a series of large irrigation and hydroelectric multi-purpose dams on the Narmada River. Following a number of controversial cases before the Supreme Court of India (1999, 2000, 2003), by 2014 the Narmada Control Authority had approved a series of changes in the final height and the associated displacement caused by the increased reservoir, from the original 80 m (260 feet) to a final 163 m (535 feet) from the foundation.

The river catchment area above the dam site is 88,000 sq. km and has a spillway discharging capacity of 87,000 cubic meters a second. Seven chute spillway radial gates and 23 service spillway gates are installed for flood control. The maximum water level is 140.21 m while the minimum drawdown level is 110.64 m. The project will irrigate more than 18,000 sq. km, most of it in drought-prone areas of Kutch and Saurashtra. The dam has two powerhouses - canal head powerhouse and river bed powerhouse - with an installed capacity of 250 MW and 1,200 MW respectively.

One can book a guided tour which will take you through 6 points around the dam site - a garden, the foundational stone laid by Jawaharlal Nehru, a site with a side view of the flow of the water from the dam, a lake where boating takes place, the first lock gate of the main canal, and a trekking site with a nature education camp for students. Near the site is also the Surpaneshwar Shiva temple that the Government had built to replace the original ancient temple that was submerged by the dam. The statue of Unity has situated approximately 3 km from the dam.
